Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, can be a big step in rejuvenating your look. If you feel that saggy breasts are a leading reason you’re unhappy with your shape, there’s a strong possibility you’ll be thrilled with the results that this procedure can provide.
Women who choose breast lift surgery often tell us they feel:
- Years younger when they see their profile in the mirror
- Eager to shop for clothes that hug their curves
- Happier with their figure overall
- An increase in self-confidence

Breast Lift Candidates
If you have breasts that droop – whether from nursing, weight loss or simply due to the passage of time – you may be considering a breast lift in Sacramento. So, how do you know if this procedure is a good choice for rejuvenating your figure?
Women who elect to have a breast lift at our Sacramento practice are looking to raise and firm up breasts that have sagged downward due to:
- Massive weight loss
- Time and gravity
One way to tell if you’re a good candidate for breast lift surgery is to evaluate the distance between the sternal notch, or the “V” at the base of your throat, and your nipples. Normal distance ranges from about 19 to 21 centimeters. If you’re tall the distance may be a little greater, but generally if your nipples are lower than this you may benefit from a lift. An even simpler test is to see whether you can rest a pencil within your breast fold. If it doesn’t fall, a breast lift, or mastopexy, may be right for you.
Every patient is unique, and Dr. David Kaufman fine-tunes surgery to meet the needs of each woman interested in a breast lift. For example, Sacramento patients have the option to have a lift with or without implants, which depends on their desire for upper pole fullness, and they also have different incision types to consider. Dr. Kaufman will help you understand the pros and cons of all your choices, and he’ll work with you to develop a surgical plan to create the results you’re seeking.
What to Expect
Breast lift surgery takes 2 to 4 hours to complete and it is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Dr. Kaufman will make incisions, eliminate excess skin, reshape your breasts to look firmer and perkier, and raise them to a more attractive position—ultimately, inserting implants if you have chosen that option. After resting for about 45 minutes in our recovery room after surgery, we’ll send you home to begin the healing process and will see you back in our office for your post operative visits—starting the very next morning. Most patients are back to work and light activities in about a week, and feeling completely normal 6 to 8 weeks after surgery.
In your research you may have found that women often choose a combination breast lift with breast augmentation. Indeed, Dr. Kaufman often recommends breast implants with a lift to create the full volume his patients are seeking. Typically he does not suggest larger breast implants to avoid a lift altogether. Unfortunately, he has seen patients who have had this kind of procedure with other surgeons, and although they are happy with their results immediately following surgery, they are not happy with them in the long run.
