Breast Augmentation Before and After Photos
This 40-year-old woman came to our practice for breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Kaufman performed her surgery using an inframammary incision to place silicone, textured implants in a subglandular plane. For more patient photos, visit our breast augmentation photo gallery.
Eliminate the Guessing Game With VECTRA 3-D Imaging
Kaufman Plastic Surgery offers patients the use of VECTRA 3-D technology to “eliminate the guessing game” and help you feel more comfortable and confident about your breast enhancement surgery. This technology allows for better communication between you and Dr. Kaufman and provides the ability to better visualize your results at the time of the consultation.
The Technology of 3-D Imaging
The process of using the 3-D technology is simple. To begin, we take a photo of your body with the VECTRA camera, and in a matter of seconds, that picture is translated into a 3-dimensional image that appears on our computer screen — showing your body from neck to hip. Then, with VECTRA technology, Dr. Kaufman is able to manipulate the 3-D image of your body to show a visual representation of what your breasts could look like after breast augmentation surgery. For instance, he can adjust the image to demonstrate what your breasts would look like with 285 cc implants compared to 450 cc — both nude and in a swim top.

Why Choose Breast Augmentation?
Often, women admit to feeling dissatisfied with their figures for years before choosing breast augmentation surgery. Therefore, many women report that they are “very pleased,” and “extremely happy” with their results.

At the same time, knowing which size is needed to achieve the desired look can be intimidating. Rest assured, Dr. Kaufman will evaluate your physique thoroughly, listen to your goals, and communicate with you clearly the different implant choices available and help you choose the right combination for your body type.

For many women considering breast augmentation, scars are a significant concern. Be assured that most women find their scars heal very well and are quite inconspicuous after a few months. Our practice offers a couple of choices as to where the incisions can be placed in order address each patient’s preferences. The options for incision placement include:
- Periareolar: at the junction of breast and areolar skin
- Inframammary fold: where the bottom of the breast meets the chest
Placement of Implants
If you’re considering breast augmentation surgery, you have a choice when it comes to the placement of your breast implants, which can be above or below the chest muscle. Dr. Kaufman understands there is no one choice for everyone. As with other decisions you’ll need to make regarding your cosmetic surgery procedure, everything is customized per the individual patient and Dr. Kaufman will make sure you feel confident about your decision so that you end up with your desired results.
Above the Muscle
Breast implants can be placed behind the breast tissue and on top of the chest muscle. This placement, called subglandular placement, can be a good choice for patients with a fair amount of natural breast tissue or those choosing silicone implants, because implants placed above the muscle are more able to be felt. Activities are in no way affected by placement above the muscle.
Below the Muscle
Most breast augmentation patients choose to have their breast implants placed below the chest muscle, called submuscular placement. Advantages include:
- Implant camouflage and softening of the upper portion of the breast
- A more natural look and feel, especially for saline implants
- Better visualization during mammography
Breast Implant Placement Options
A few disadvantages to sub-muscular placement are that they can commonly become slightly deformed when the muscle is contracted and return to their normal shape when the muscle is relaxed. This is a potential issue for women who are very thin and for body builders. Also, placement under the chest muscle involves a slightly more painful recovery, but not markedly so.
About the Surgery
Dr. Kaufman performs breast augmentation in our private, on-site, fully accredited surgical center, and board-certified M.D. anesthesiologists from Mercy Folsom Hospital provide anesthetic care. Dr. Kaufman will make the incisions discussed at your preoperative appointment, create pockets for the breast implants (above or below the muscle), place the implants inside the pockets, and close the incisions.
You’ll spend about 45 minutes in our recovery room after surgery. We’ll monitor you carefully, and when you’re ready, you’ll go home to begin the healing process.
Recovery after Breast Augmentation
When you leave our surgery center, you will be wearing a soft bra for support and, sometimes but not often, a breast band to secure the placement of the implants and minimize swelling. You will return to our office for post-operative appointments the morning after surgery, as well as at 1 week, 6 weeks and 6 months.
Right after breast augmentation surgery, breast implants usually look high and feel hard. After about 4 weeks, swelling will have decreased and your breasts will most likely be looking really good. By the 6-month mark, final swelling will have resolved and your breasts will have reached their ultimate shape and position.
