Risks of Breast Surgery
General surgical risks include anesthesia complications, excess bleeding, fluid collection, adverse reaction to medications and others. Risks related to breast surgery include:
- Unacceptable scarring: Most patients' scars fade to be quite faint within a few months of surgery. A few patients find their scars to be more prominent than they would like, whether due to genetics, infection or other conditions. Most unfavorable scars can be improved with minor revision surgery.
- Infections: Few patients experience deep infections which require drainage. Occasionally a patient may experience a superficial infection. Most respond well to oral and/or intravenous antibiotics.
- Changes in sensation: Temporary changes in sensation accompany some breast surgeries. Rarely, changes can be permanent.
- Changes in skin appearance: Some swelling and bruising is to be expected. Patients occasionally experience skin discoloration or changes in pigmentation. Very rarely are such changes permanent.
Other risks that happen to a fraction of women may include irregularities in breast shape, damage to internal structures such as muscles and nerves, fatty tissue necrosis, blood clots and persistent pain. Dr. Kaufman, Dr. Clark and their staff will give you detailed pre- and post-op instructions to help you avoid complications and have a smooth recovery.
