Understanding Anesthesia
To be completed comfortably, breast surgery in Sacramento, like all cosmetic surgery procedures, requires some level of anesthesia. Most procedures are performed under general anesthesia where you will sleep comfortably through the procedure. Alternatively, conscious sedation (also called twilight anesthesia) may be chosen for select procedures.
There are, of course, advantages and disadvantages to each. In twilight anesthesia, you remain awake while medications make you sleepy and decrease the sensation of discomfort. With general anesthesia, you are completely asleep. In our practice, for most surgeries including breast enlargement, Sacramento patients receive general anesthesia. We use general anesthesia almost exclusively because that's what we would want for ourselves.
In either case – conscious sedation or general anesthesia – a board certified anesthesiologist will provide your care throughout the entire procedure. We feel this is a key element of safety and smooth recovery. Some practices rely on anesthesia provided by a certified nurse anesthetist or registered nurse. While many nurses are extremely skilled in their profession, board certified MD anesthesiologists undergo the most rigorous training. We feel they are the most skilled and can provide the highest level of safety and quality care.
