Placement of Implants

Request a Consultation Before & After Photos

If you're researching breast implants in Sacramento, CA, you probably already know there are two options for implant placement: below or above the pectoralis (chest) muscle. There is no definite "better" place to put implants. As in many other decisions you'll need to make about your cosmetic surgery procedure, "it all depends."

When they choose breast implants, Sacramento women most often have them placed below the muscle. Advantages include:

  • Implant camouflage and softening of the superior pole, or upper portion
  • A more natural look and feel, especially for saline implants
  • Better visualization during mammography
  • The possibility of a lower risk of capsular contracture, though this is in debate - read more about capsular contracture

Breast Implant PlacementWhen implants are placed below the muscle for breast augmentation in Sacramento, they commonly become slightly deformed when the muscle is activated. They return to their normal shape when the muscle is relaxed. This is a potential issue for women who are very thin and for body builders. Also, placement under the chest muscle is a bit more painful, but not markedly so.

Above the muscle placement locates the implants right behind the breast tissue. It can be a good choice for patients with a fair amount of natural breast tissue or those choosing silicone breast implants, since implants are more easily palpable - or able to be felt - above the muscle. Activities are in no way affected by placement above the muscle.
